| Family Support Group |
| In the Alzheimer Care Centre, we run a support group for the carers and families of
people with Dementia. This group we classify as the "walking wounded" or the "hidden sufferers". These are the other
victims of the disease.
They come from all walks of life both young and old, families and friends but they all have one thing in common they
wish to help their relative who is the victim, in a loving manner, in any way possible to maintain their dignity.
But unfortunately, through the harsh realities of the disease, they themselves fall victim to the emotional and physical
consequences. |
| Meetings |
| The Support Group meets monthly. Carers need only attend for as long as they feel
they have to. This in some cases can be continually but for others, only occasionally. Due to size, the group tends to
subdivide.
New members are introduced and encouraged to talk out their feelings. They quickly discover a person there with whom
they can identify and who can help the healing process.
It is not necessary to have a patient in one of our hospitals, it is free of charge and anyone is welcome to come along
to our meetings. |
| Aim |
| The aim of the Support Group is primarily to integrate people so as to share their common
experiences and to learn new ways of coping with the illness. |
