| The Memory Clinic is a specialized service for people who are experiencing memory loss and related cognitive changes.
If someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is advisable that he/she is referred to the memory clinic
- Recent memory loss that affects job skills
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks
- Problems with language
- Disorientation of time and place
- Poor or decreased judgment
- Problems with abstract thinking
- Misplacing things
- Getting lost
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Changes in personality
- Loss of initiative
The Memory Clinic provides:
- Assessment, evaluation and diagnostic workup
- Ongoing medication management and help with challenging behaviours
- Information, education and support for family caregivers
- The assessment requires a half-day clinic visit for assessment and a follow-up appointment for patients and caregivers for communication of diagnosis and recommendations for care. The family caregiver may be in regular contact with us in person, by phone, by e-mail or via support groups for ongoing information, education, support and advice about community resources.
The Memory Clinic's Memory Evaluation and Management Programme can determine if patients' memory problems are due to normal changes that occur with ageing, treatable physical causes such as depression, infection, nutritional deficiency, medication interaction or chronic changes in brain function. During the initial exam, our specialists will review the patients medical history, evaluate memory and brain function, and then review the results and discuss specific recommendations with the patient and relative.
With proper diagnosis and treatment, people experiencing memory loss are helped to live as independently as possible for a long as possible, and families are assisted to plan for the future care needs of their loved ones.
This service is operated by a Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist and a Community Mental Health Nurse.
